Music of the Spheres® Wind Chime tunings or scales

The tunings or musical scale is the melody your wind chime plays. Each metal tube of your chime is perfectly tuned to a specific note on the musical scale. The tuning of the chime consists of 6 or 7 notes (7 for Gypsy and Whole Tone only) which make up the melody. There are ten standard tunings for each chime size: Aquarian, Balinese, Chinese, Gypsy, Hawaiian, Mongolian, Pentatonic, Quartal, and Whole Tone. Each of the five standard chime sizes (from smallest to largest; Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass) are available in your choice of ten different musical tunings (also called scales). When selecting a chime, choose the size you want and then choose a scale (tuning) that sings most sweetly to you. The ten musical scales made plus Westminster are divisible into two main categories of music which are simply called the "more familiar" and the "more exotic" sound. There is also the expanded quartal scale for the Contra-Bass and Basso Profundo wind chime.

Customer Comment: This merchant is wonderful to do business with. I have just purchased my third Music of the Spheres windchimes from them. Theyre great to deal with and have the best merchandise available. Donna C. - Birmingham AL

FAMILIAR SOUNDING EXOTIC SOUNDING
Pentatonic  Quartal  Chinese
Mongolian  Westminster
Hawaiian  Japanese  Balinese
Whole Tone  Aquarian  Gypsy

You will find the distinctions between the categories easier to make than the distinctions between windchimes within a category. The "familiar" major scales are quite similar one to the other, while the exotic scales are only somewhat similar one to the other. If you are having trouble deciding what you like, first determine the category that pleases you and focus there. The familiar major scales are quite similar one to the other, while the exotic scales are only somewhat similar to one another.  Listen and watch for a tuning that seems to make you feel at ease and relaxed. Let your mind relax and enjoy the process, it's not an intellectual exercise. And besides, there's no wrong answer.

 SUGGESTED CHIME ENSEMBLES

The same musical scale, or tuning, in different pitch ranges harmonize wonderfully, creating a magical "singing in parts" effect. You can never go wrong adding to your collection with another voice in the same scale. There are also combinations of scales which sound particularly harmonious. In these you can mix any size and still make a great decision. These combinations are:

Chinese - Balinese - Japanese

Japanese - Gypsy

Pentatonic - Hawaiian
